“Albania will become a coordination center for fighters returning from ISIS to the Balkans,” announced Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borissov during a joint press conference with Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama during a conference against violent extremism, which took place in Tirana this week.

Neither prime minister offered additional details, such as who is pushing this plan or with whom it is being negotiated. This vagueness generated criticism that Rama had not only failed to consult with parliament on this matter of grave importance to his country but perhaps he himself was not fully consulted.

Albania has been used before to host undesirables. In 2005, the United States sent five inmates from Guantanamo Bay there. Between 2013 and 2016, Washington also relocated 2,901 Mojahedin-e Khalq (MEK) extremists there from Iraq, which had been trying to expel them since 2003.

Now, the Trump administration is telling Albania to host and de-radicalize former Islamic State (ISIS or IS) fighters who originated from the Balkans region. According to Colonel Bardhyl Kollcaku, head of Albania’s Intelligence and Security Agency, “We have the appropriate experience to contribute in the study and addressing the phenomenon of foreign fighters.”

If the MEK had been de-radicalized, Kollcaku’s assertion would be credible. But they weren’t.

In 2013, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton pragmatically removed the MEK from the US terrorism list to allow members to be sent to third countries so that Iraq could be rid of them. European countries would not take them because of their terrorist past. Instead, the Albanian government agreed to take them only on the promise that a de-radicalization institute be established to reintegrate the extremists back into society.

This did not happen. The allocated budget, lodged with the American embassy in Tirana, has not been touched. Instead, after Donald Trump became president and set about dismantling every detail of Barack Obama’s legacy, the MEK were “allowed” to regroup.

Regrouping meant that the MEK would continue to call for violent regime change against Iran, backed by US extremists like Rudi Giuliani and John Bolton who now occupy influential posts in the Trump administration. As a result, Albania has become a front-line enemy state in relation to Iran.

Regrouping also meant re-enslaving members, who are not paid and have no human rights. It also meant building a closed camp in a remote part of the country to which Albanian authorities and security services have no access. As though Albania wasn’t having a hard time already cracking down on criminal and mafia gangs, now the MEK are implicated in criminal activity. Among several individuals arrested for money laundering last month, two Israelis were found to be associated with FARA NGO. This is the same company involved in building the closed military training base in Manez to which rank-and-file MEK fighters were moved last autumn.

At the same time that was happening, word got out that the widows and orphans of killed IS fighters would soon be transferred to the MEK’s deserted buildings in the Albanian capital of Tirana. Such rumors were dismissed at the time. Now it appears that the truth is much worse. Actual IS fighters will be sent to Albania.

It’s possible, however, that the IS fighters will follow a similar trajectory as the MEK in Albania. Western powers have seen Syria and Iraq fall away from their influence. Hezbollah governs Lebanon, and a restive population wrapped up in the politics of Palestine is challenging the stability of Jordan. These are uncertain times in the Middle East. Some individuals in Western power structures have broached the possibility of creating a bespoke covert mercenary force to bring fresh chaos and violence into the mix. Although the MEK has been such a handy tool for aggravating Iran, former IS fighters could, with the right training, constitute a similar force against other countries.

And although John Bolton recently remarked that regime change against Iran is now off the Trump administration’s agenda, continued patronage of the MEK belies that claim. So, this is not just Albania’s problem. The West needs to urgently ask, “What use is the Islamic State now?”

Analistët e huaj: Shqipëria mezi po lufton grupet mafioze, tani duhet të edukojë luftëtarët e ISIS

13:27, 09/06/2018

Albanian PM offends the Jews by comparing their suffering to terrorists

Albania, situated in the middle of the Balkans, harbours one of the most eccentric political leaders in Europe. But Edi Rama, Prime Minister of the country, doesn’t claim the spotlight only for his lavish dress sense. On May 13th Prime Minister Rama surprised once more by comparing the suffering of Jewish people during the Second World war to a terrorist organization known as the MEK. A comparison that isn’t only stupid, it’s also deeply offensive against the Jews who suffered under the Nazis.

For those who are not familiar with the Mojahedin Khalq (MEK), allow me to give you a short history. The MEK is a terrorist organization, responsible for thousands of civilian murders in Iran and Iraq over three decades. Until 2012 MEK was listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, the year Hillary Clinton decided to delist them and strike a deal with Albania to take them in.

Nowadays the MEK is demanding that the US and Israel rain bombs down on the homes of their own families in Iran. They were brought to Albania because Iraq refused to tolerate the presence of American backed former Saddamists in their country. They were supposed to be de-radicalized and rehabilitated back into society once they arrived. To be completely clear, this never happened.

Instead, the Americans have insisted on re-grouping the MEK and using them as ‘regime change’ marketeers; placing Albania on the front line in the Neocon’s and Likud’s war against Iran.

Albania, which has already more than enough trouble fighting the well-known organized crime sector, is now wasting costly resources and police officers to keep this vile and dangerous group under control.

This anecdotal view comes with its own headlines. Criminals involved in drug smugglingand arms and human trafficking are still highly organized and very active. The mysterious disappearance of 60 asylum seekers has been treated by the police and SHISH as a matter of state secrecy. Albanian officials I spoke with said, off the record, there was no doubt they had been trafficked to Europe but that the government does not want Europe to be aware of this ongoing business. The fact that some of those who disappeared belonged to the Iranian Mojahedin Khalq (MEK) terrorist group only adds to what the report called a “scary event”.

In this context, Rama has a lot to answer for but has evaded the difficult questions. One of those difficult issues is the disturbing activities of the MEK in the country. Since the first arrivals in 2013 to the last group who arrived at the end of 2016, this group has caused controversy. Only recently, local residents in Manzë had enough of it and protested against their presence. Pointing not only to the MEK’s unwelcome use of their families’ cemetery to bury their dead, but also to the economical inequality between ordinary Albanian citizens and MEK members. Those members do not have pay or pensions and therefore pay no taxes but are afforded the luxury of 24-hour water and electricity supplies that locals cannot access.

When asked by Italian Radio Radicale about the MEK presence in Albania (3.30m – 5.15m), Rama’s oafish, self-satisfied reply is a shocking example of lazy, casual Anti-Semitism. He likens sheltering the MEK now to sheltering Jewish people fleeing the Nazis during WWII.

This comparison is deeply, deeply offensive to Jewish people. The history and current situation of the MEK is about as diametrically opposed to the experience of Jewish people in Nazi Europe as it is possible to imagine.

PM Rama is not only wrong – the MEK’s unchecked presence in Albania is also an affront to the citizens of that country – he reveals how un-statesmanlike he is. How incapable of showing leadership and how easily he has been ‘persuaded’ to stupidly and ignorantly follow American and Israeli foreign policy to the detriment of his own country’s national interests. If unchecked, the MEK in Albania could turn into an even bigger problem for the country, as the recent protest shows.

Kryeministri shqiptar fyen hebrejtë duke krahasuar vuajtjet e tyre me terroristët

 gazeta impakt -May 19, 2018

In Albania last week, two Mojahedin-e Khalq (MEK) members asked permission from their commanders to leave their base, Camp Ashraf Three in Manza, to visit the graves of MEK buried on the outskirts of Tirana. After leaving the camp they travelled to the UNHCR in Tirana to ask for refuge. They are now living among over two hundred other dissociated members in Tirana.

Graves of MEK buried on the outskirts of Tirana

This event tells us several disturbing things about the MEK in Albania.

First, that MEK members must ask permission for an activity as simple as visiting a graveyard. Second, that members are trying to escape the group. Conditions inside Camp Ashraf Three are difficult to independently ascertain. It is a closed camp. Not even government agencies such as security services and customs are allowed inside. The UNHCR cannot freely visit and inspect the premises. But according to conversations with dissociated members in Albania, it seems the residents are suffering the same conditions as they did in Iraq. There they were held in conditions of modern slavery and forced to undertake work for the group with no pay. Every aspect of their everyday lives was dictated by the leader Maryam Rajavi (who took over after the death of the cult leader Massoud Rajavi); who they spoke with, what they believed in and even what they ate and wore.

The event also alerts us to the fact that many MEK are dying in Albania. According to dissociated members speaking anonymously, there are three times as many deaths by natural causes in Albania as there were in Iraq. In Iraq the MEK excuse was “no doctors”. It would be interesting to discover what the MEK excuse is now.

One reason, of course, is that many of the MEK are elderly, many are sick. The average age of MEK members is above 60. At this age most people would be looking forward to a comfortable and relaxed retirement, to allow the younger generation to take over their work. Not the MEK. They have no younger generation after forced divorces and the removal of children left an ageing polity. Members must work until they die. Recruitment has proved extremely difficult because the group is hated by almost all Iranians. As a result, the MEK resorts to deceptive recruitment and coercive control for maintaining members.

One aspect of this deception is that rather than being ‘refugees’ as the MEK claim, the members have legal status in Albania. The government of Iraq did not allow them refugee status in Iraq because they are terrorists. They were brought to Albania by the UNHCR without travel documents; each migrant was given a piece of paper stating, ‘on humanitarian grounds’. Similarly, the government of Albania does not allow the MEK members or ex-members to be given either refugee status or residence or work permits. The secret agreement between Albania, the US and the MEK leader struck in 2013 included the provision for de-radicalisation once the members arrived in Tirana. This did not happen; the earmarked budget remains untouched in the American embassy, the MEK remain radicalised for terrorism.

The graveyard also raises another disturbing issue. There are sixteen public graves. It is reported that many others have since died but the MEK now buries them inside Camp Ashraf Three. It has already been ascertained that independent investigation cannot take place there, so it is not known how many graves there are. In Iraq there were hundreds.

The number of graves matters. When the US army detained the MEK in 2003, there were 3,800 members. (See  RAND Corporation – The  Mujahedin-e Khalq  in Iraq A Policy Conundrum, Summary xiii.) Over the next fifteen years, attrition of members through dissociation, conflict, deaths by natural causes, suicide and murder meant that when the UNHCR brought the last group of MEK to Albania in September 2016, the total number relocated was 2,901 individuals with 2,745 remaining at the end of that year. Since then well over two hundred have left; some departed Albania, around two hundred remain destitute in the country.

However, according to a report from US Senator Robert Torricelli, an official representative of the MEK, there are currently over four thousand MEK in Camp Ashraf Three. Where did the extra numbers come from? Are these MEK or are they the widows and orphans of killed Daesh members which investigative journalist Gjergji Thanasi discovered were destined to be the next controversial influx of undesirables dumped on Albania by the Americans. Have some already arrived?

Thanasi made the discovery while investigating import permit irregularities linked to the construction of MEK’s closed Camp Ashraf Three. This led to the further discovery that MEK is not registered for tax and does not conform to any Albanian law or customs or morals. And since the MEK members are not registered anywhere – they have no identification documents, have no work permits and pay no taxes – they could be anyone. The four thousand residents of Camp Ashraf Three – with its small-arms firing range, reinforced concrete armoury, three-meter wall and guard turrets – could be literally anyone.

Yet instead of investigating this disturbing situation, with some notable exceptions, Albania’s media have seen fit to uncritically publish the MEK’s defamatory statements aimed at silencing critics and diverting attention from their criticisms. When confidence tricksters do this, it is called ‘misdirection’; divert the attention of the target while they are robbed. When the MEK do it, it is called politics.

If it was the intention of some Albanian media outlets to politicise the MEK presence in the country, and by doing so bring the conflict between America, Israel and Saudi Arabia with Iran, to Tirana, then they have succeeded. However, it is surely not the role of an independent, objective media to act as a mouthpiece for any side. It is far more fitting for serious journalism to investigate the serious and evidenced allegations of human rights abuses, modern slavery, tax evasion, people trafficking, political corruption and facilitating terrorism which are levelled against the MEK, and report the facts to their country’s citizens.

Fact-Finding Mission to Rescue Separated MEK Unearths Profound Security Issues

Anne Khodabandeh of Iran-Interlink visited Albania twice for a fact-finding mission in November and December. The fact-finding mission was to investigate the situation of separated members of the MEK and to see what needed to be done to help them and others who will be separating in future. Anne was also invited to speak in a workshop about her work as an expert in prevention and de-radicalisation of violent extremism and terrorism. Khodabandeh works as ‘Open Minds’under the UK government’s Prevent Duty programme.

During her humanitarian mission during which she spoke to many separated members about their experiences and difficulties, Khodabandeh also discovered a great deal of disconcerting information in regard to the MEK’s activities in Albania. Some of this information has already been made public through various written pieces and media interviews and television reportsfrom Tirana. This concerns the MEK actively recruiting Albanian youth [also], links with theAlbanian mafia and plans to move the members to an isolated camp.

However, Anne Khodabandeh went on to brief British and American security services about the various security issues which have arisen as a direct result of the MEK’s presence in Albania.

On Tuesday, following a meeting on Monday between the Committee on Foreign Affairs in the EU Parliament on Monday and Ditmir Bushati, Albania’s foreign affairs minister, Khodabandeh was able to brief officials in European Parliament buildings who have direct concern for Albanian affairs. They acknowledged that this information would be helpful in appraising Albania’s efforts to join the European Union.

Warning: MEK moving members to a remote and isolated camp in Albania (aka Mojahedin Khalq Rajavi cult)

For three days now, the Mojahedin-e Khalq Organization (MEK, MKO, Rajavi cult) in Albania has been relocating its members to a remote and isolated camp in Albania which they have called the ‘Ashraf Three’ base after Camp Ashraf, the main MEK garrison in Iraq. The new base is surrounded by high walls and barbed wire to prevent the members from escaping.

Since a long time ago the Rajavi cult has been covertly establishing facilities far away from Tirana, or any other town or city, to which it can move its members and separate them from the outside world. The aim is to exert maximum control over them to enable further brainwashing them without interference. A remote and isolated place similar to Camp Ashraf in Iraq is an ideal place for coercive psychological manipulation because it allows the leaders to control the followers both physically and mentally.

At present, the MEK members in Tirana enjoy some limited access to the outside world. This is not tolerable for the cult. The cult leader Maryam Rajavi wants her followers captive all the time. If they have free access to the outside world they will realize they are continually being told lies and they will discover that there is a way out.

The method of controlling the members inside the MEK is mind manipulation which requires an isolated area from which the members cannot escape and gradually people forget about the free world and accept their lives in there.

Cults like the MEK do not allow their members access to uncensored news or information. If they are moved to this new base the situation will be even worse than it was for them in Iraq since they now know a lot more than they did before about the outside world and therefore the internal pressure and suppression will be more severe.

The cult has also forced members to sign documents to swear that they wish to move to the new place willingly and voluntarily and they have no right to leave the place ever. They are told that this is for their own safety and security which is not correct. In this way they are giving away their rights and freedom for the rest of their lives.

The members have also been given promises of excellent facilities and services which are all lies and even if any such privileges existed these do not replace family relations and contact with the outside world which the cult is denying.

For instance, is it not worse that the members will not have access to the internet and will not be able to contact their families? In Rajavi’s world one has to live isolated from the world and only listen to the cult leaders.

Sahar Family Foundation urges all humanitarian activists and organizations around the world to prevent this human catastrophe from happening and rescue these people from being deceived into a lifelong prison.
