Happy Persian New Year – Happy Norooz (Nowruz)
This ancient celebration marks the first day of Spring and occurs on the Spring Equinox. Norooz has been celebrated by people from diverse ethnic communities and religious backgrounds for thousands of years. A feature of the occasion is the Haftsin table on which are displayed seven items beginning with the Persian letter S to symbolize the renewal of life.
In recognition of the importance of this ancient rite, Nowruz was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009. Moreover, in 2010, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 21 March International Nowruz Day.
